Marija Gimbutas (1921–1994) was an archaeologist who wrote extensively about prehistoric farming cultures in southeastern Europe. She believed these communities were peaceful cultures, led by women, and practiced religions focused on a mother goddess. Her work is popular with non‐archaeologists and some scholars of religion, but has been critiqued by archaeologists.
