Relief XI

The work belongs to the composition "Ten low reliefs" presented at the Venice Biennale in 1960. A characteristic feature of these works is that Alex Mylonas uses stone and metal. On the stone, which acts as a supporting surface, sheets of copper foil with abstract forms and shapes are attached, reproducing, either as such or in fragments, forms and shapes of her sculptural compositions of those years, such as Aphrodite, Defence, Minotaur, Mycenae, Labyrinth and Epopeia. A playfulness is evident as there is potentially the potential for a wide range of variations since the reliefs can be placed in different positions and in combinations with each other. An element that characterizes Alex Mylonas' art in general is the use of different materials (cement, stone, iron, bronze, aluminium, marble), the exploitation of their intrinsic properties, texture and expressive potential.
