The Passing of Paternalism in Mission: A Challenge to Reverse Mission
View through CrossRef
Abstract
This article delves into the transformative journey of missionary work, tracing its historical roots characterized by paternalistic attitudes and approaches. Drawing inspiration from Kenneth Saunders’ observation that nineteenth-century missionary endeavours were steeped in paternalism, this article defines paternalism as a belief in unwarranted superiority, often leading to prejudiced views based on race, ethnicity, or background. The article explores the evolution away from paternalism in missions and the emergence of a new challenge known as reverse mission. Employing a methodology combining literature analysis and interviews with three African pastors serving in Norway, the United States, and the United Kingdom, we illuminate the changing landscape of missionary work. This shift signifies a broader transition in global missionary efforts, where mutual respect and partnership among diverse cultures are taking precedence over the old paradigm of superiority and hierarchy.
