Gordon W. Allport, a Harvard psychologist, once prepared a set of rules, or principles, that should govern the preparation of sound psychological studies, or biographies. When put into practice, however, the rules failed to produce persuasive characterizations unless combined with the kind of literary skills used by novelists and historians.
