The Appearance of the Angel to St. Roch

View through Europeana Collections
The canvas depicting the Appearance of the Angel to St Roque was painted by Gaspar Dias for the retable of a chapel built at the site of the head of the St Roque primitive hermitage, now in the Professed House of the Company of Jesus in Lisbon, run by the Confraternity placed under the protection of this saint in the mid-1580s. According to the hagiography, St Roque was portrayed as a pilgrim in this episode. He receives a visit from the angel sent by god to treat his wounds with balsam and water to stop his feverish thirst after being infected with the plague during his assistance mission to care for the sick. A dog brought him bread daily to feed him. The naturalness, elegance and grace imprinted on the figures painted by Gaspar Dias, stand out in the foreground of a composition in which an architectural gallery, designed according to the model of Hans Vredeman de Vries for the Temple of Solomon, houses characters alluding to other passages of St Roque (text by Maria João Vilhena).
