Abstract
Muses are depicted on sarcophagi (of all sizes) either as the whole group of nine, which forms the main subject of the composition, or in a smaller number as accessories to some other scene. There are also single scenes in which individual Muses are shown in human company, often with philosopher-like figures. Although these are sometimes discussed separately (cf. Marrou 1937: nos. 93 ff.; Fittschen 1972: 487 f., and KS 203) it seemed most useful to include them here, along with the relevant Christian material.
