Petticoat of figured silk trimmed with silk bobbin lace, France, 1775-1780. Petticoat of figured white silk trimmed with applied silk and silk lace. The silks has a design of vertical floral trails with a band of narrow stripes and narrow vertical floral bands. The petticoat has a straight front panel and is pleated at the sides and back where there is additional material let in around the pocket slit to give breadth for the hoop. The waist band is of tape and continues round to fasten at the beck. The petticoat is trimmed at knee level with a wide scalloped flounce headed with cartridge gathers edged with blond and stuffed with cotton wool. Below, at the hem, is a zig zag band of padded blond trimming like that of the skirt (T.163-1964).
