Among the imperatives I was given when I renewed my acquaintance with Oxford in 1997 was, ‘Go meet Sally Mapstone; she’s the real thing’. This instruction, of course, followed upon one of Sally’s great public triumphs, her Bodleian exhibit, certainly the outstanding, if not the first, demonstration of Scots book-arts outwith Scotland—and an important demonstration of Sally’s most abiding contribution. Her demonstration to the Scots of their own culture has always relied upon evidence of book-history, as well as upon their scarcely plumbed historical archive....
