Farrar, Fredric W.

Frederic W. Farrar (1831–1903) was best known in his lifetime as the author of the boys’ public school novel Eric; or, Little by Little (1858) although he published other novels of school and university life. In addition, his theological and philological writings were also widely read, and his published sermons were extremely popular. Earlier in his career, Farrar taught at Marlborough College and Harrow School and was later headmaster at Harrow. And later in his career, Farrar rose through the religious ranks, serving as Canon of Westminster, then Archdeacon of Westminster, and finally Dean of Canterbury until his death.
