Porträt Nicolaus Hieronymus Gundling (1671-1729)

Portrait of Nicolaus Hieronymus Gundling. The German universal scholar is shown here as a chest pattern to the right in the profile. He turned his head towards the observer, but he looks slightly to the left past him. He wears a long curly wig, a jabot around his neck and a cape that covers the rest of his clothes. The effigy is framed oval. It rests on a base underneath. An oval coat of arms denounces around the middle of the base. The pedestal presents a five-line inscription with information about the job of the depicted as well as his life data: "Nicolaus Hieronymus Gundlingius, J Ctus Potent. Regi Boruss. a consil intimate. et Ecclesiast. Profess. Jur. Order in Reg. Fridericiana, obut Pro Rector Magnificus. d. IX Dec. MDCCXXIX. natus d. 25 Feb. MDCLXXI." Nicolaus Hieronymus Gundling first studied philosophy and theology in Altdorf near Nuremberg and in Jena. With a group of noble people he came to Halle in 1698, where he met the professor of law, Christian Thomasius (BS-III 348, BS-III 582). He encouraged him to study law. Gundling became Thomasius' most important student. He received his doctorate in law from 1703 and in 1707 he was appointed full professor of history and eloquence at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Halle. In 1712 he moved to the professorship of law and became the Magdeburg Consistory council. He died during his tenure as rector of the University of Halle. The leaf has been trimmed, no signatures can be discovered. The Duke August Library in Wolfenbüttel attributes the paper to the Leipzig artist Martin Bernigeroth (1670-1733). There seems to be no template. A time of creation is estimated between 1729 and 1733.
