“Untitled”

Womanism Rising ends with a reflection that jumps off from the artwork immediately preceding it, Debra Elaine Johnson’s evocative and provocative “Untitled.” Discussing each of the included artworks by both Linda Costa Photography and Johnson in turn, the brief essay becomes an opportunity to meditate upon the particular contributions of the volume’s many womanist authors as well as the future of womanism itself. The significance of womanist art and womanism as art—the art of world-making, the art of survival, the art of healing ourselves, each other, our communities, and Earth—is played up. In the end, the reader is reminded that we are shaping the future moment by moment and choice by choice, and that many futures—womanist and otherwise—await our creation.
