French Revolutionary Wars (1792–1802)

Abstract
It may seem a supreme paradox that a revolution which preached the liberty of humankind should have devoted so much of its energy to waging war. Less than three years, indeed, after the Estates‐General assembled at Versailles, Europe was plunged into a conflict that would last, with only a short truce at Amiens, until Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo, 23 years later. The first phase of that conflict, from 1792 until 1802, is usually referred to as the French Revolutionary Wars.
