The Battle of Sentinum

Abstract
At the Battle of Sentinum in 295 BCE, the Romans defeated a coalition of Samnites, Gauls, Etruscans, and Umbrians in the decisive battle for preeminence in Italy. The allies’ defeat at Sentinum did not represent the last Italian effort to contain Roman power (or even the end of the Third Samnite War), but the result prevented them from ever again uniting in their opposition to Rome, allowing Rome to conquer a divided Italy. This chapter examines the growth of Roman power in the fourth century and the developments that led to the battle as well as its significance in shaping the future of Italy.
