Electric circuit

View through Europeana Collections
In the late 1910s, some of the artists of the Russian avant-garde, influenced by the advancements and developments in modern technology, turned their attention to new scientific discoveries. Kliment Redko formulated his manifesto on "Electro-Organism," in which he claimed that knowledge of the laws of light in painting determined the texture of colour and form. Crucial in this context was the "scientific" representation of light as a form of energy, akin to an interpretation of electricity. Karel Ioganson, influenced by Redko's "Electro-Organism" theory and recognizing the significance of electrical energy, created the artwork "Electric Circuit" in 1922 as part of his INKHUK (Institute of Artistic Culture) constructive exercises. With this piece, he aimed to pay tribute to one of humanity's most important inventions: electricity.
