Tele Pharmacy in Patient Care: A Comprehensive Literature Review (2019-2024)

View through CrossRef
Telepharmacy has emerged as a transformative healthcare delivery model that leverages telecommunications technology to provide pharmaceutical care services remotely [1, 2]. This literature review examines the current applications, benefits, challenges, and future directions of telepharmacy in patient care over the past five years (2019-2024). The review synthesizes findings from 85 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on telepharmacy implementation across various healthcare settings including rural hospitals, community pharmacies, long-term care facilities, and ambulatory care centers [3, 4]. Current applications demonstrate significant expansion in medication management, clinical decision support, medication reconciliation, and patient counseling services [5, 6]. Telepharmacy has proven particularly valuable in addressing pharmacist shortages, improving access to care in underserved areas, and enhancing medication safety through remote verification and monitoring systems [7, 8]. Studies consistently report improved patient outcomes, reduced medication errors, decreased healthcare costs, and increased patient satisfaction scores [9, 10]. Key benefits include enhanced accessibility to pharmaceutical services, particularly in rural and remote areas, improved workflow efficiency, and better integration with electronic health records [11, 12]. However, challenges persist including regulatory barriers, reimbursement limitations, technology infrastructure requirements, and concerns regarding patient privacy and security [13, 14]. Future directions indicate growing integration with artificial intelligence, machine learning algorithms, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices [15, 16]. Emerging trends include personalized medicine applications, automated dispensing systems, and expanded scope of practice for remote pharmacists [17, 18]. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated telepharmacy adoption, highlighting its potential for pandemic response and emergency preparedness [19, 20]. Despite promising developments, successful implementation requires addressing regulatory harmonization, establishing standardized protocols, and ensuring adequate technology infrastructure [21, 22]. As healthcare continues evolving toward value-based care models, telepharmacy represents a critical component for achieving optimal medication therapy outcomes while maintaining cost-effectiveness and patient-centered care delivery [23, 24].
