View through CrossRef
This study examines the historical, socio-cultural and political trajectory of the Nguni people settled on the Angónia Plateau in Tete Province. This ethnic group settled in the region in the 19th century, in the context of the regional migratory movement known as the Mfecane, a process that contributed to the demographic and socio-political reorganisation of Southern Africa. The study focuses on understanding the origins of the Nguni, the circumstances of their settlement, as well as their socio-political structures, economic dynamics and transformations over time, including the colonial period. Specifically, the research describes the historical context of the occupation of the Angónia Plateau, identifies the succession of leaders (kings), analyses the political regimes and sociocultural practices of each reign, and interprets the symbolic value of the Zinthambira Tombs and the traditional Ngoma dance. The research also highlights the monument located in Folotia, comprising the tombs of Nguni rulers buried in a seated position, an element that carries strong historical and cultural significance for local communities. Methodologically, this is an exploratory study with a qualitative approach, guided by the inductive method. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews with members of the royal family, including Queen Zinthambira IV, and traditional leaders. The data were analysed using content analysis.
