State of Domestic Violence in Zambia

Domestic violence which is also known as domestic abuse or family violence is recognized as violence or other abuse in a domestic setting, such as in marriage or cohabitation. Issue of domestic violence may mean intimate partner violence and mostly committed by partners in an inmate relationship. In its broadest sense, domestic violence also involves violence against children, parents, or the elderly. It takes a number of forms, including physical, verbal, emotional, economic, religious, reproductive, and sexual abuse, which can range from subtle, coercive forms to marital rape and to violent physical abuse such as choking, beating, female genital mutilation, and acid or hot water throwing that results in disfigurement or death. Domestic murders include stoning, bride burning, honour killings, and dowry deaths, for example it involve non-cohabitating family members in certain instances. The communities of Zambia are estimated to have experienced at least one form of the domestic violence during their life time in marriage or union therefore at a broader perspective, domestic violence is said to impact a lot of things towards the country’s development. Because of this, this paper ascertained the causes of Domestic violence against women in Chanyanya of Kafue district of Zambia. It examined the implication of domestic violence against women in the area, further it established challenges that are faced by the civil society organizations and the government in curbing social impacts of domestic violence against women and lastly, it assessed the current efforts by the civil society and government in the mitigation of domestic violence in the community and how it has induced change. This paper proposes a number of tangible solutions to the discovered problems in the recommendation section which may be attainable if there is a systematic planning and a well-directed intervention system in the country. This can only be done if all the people of the community and those in authority put efforts towards the same goal with unit and corporation.
