İnsan ve İmtihan

The Human Being and the Divine Test Topics such as the purpose of human existence and the meaning of life are as old as human history itself. Systems of belief and thought have produced various ideas on these and similar subjects. These topics, explained through revelation in the divine religions, continue to occupy the human mind to this day. The concept of imtihan (trial), accepted in Islam as the purpose of human life, is also one of the topics discussed in this context. In this study, the concept of imtihan is centered as a theological problem, and the focus is on its impact on the realm of human thought and behavior. In the first section, the concept of imtihan is analyzed, with an emphasis on the etymology of the word and an evaluation within the framework of verses from the Quran. Concepts closely associated with it -such as bela, fitna, and musibet (destruction, temptation, and affliction)- are also addressed using a similar methodology. In the second chapter, the concept of imtihan is explained within the context of Islamic theological schools conceptions of God. In this regard, conceptions of God as just, possessing absolute will, and endowed with wisdom are discussed. In the third chapter, the capabilities and qualifications of human beings -who are expected to establish a moral order throughout their worldly lives- are examined. For the fact that humans were created with the capacity to do both good and evil ensures that they act with an awareness of their responsibilities toward themselves, society, and the universe. Additionally, this chapter elucidates the relationship between human free will and moral behavior in the context of the imtihan.
