The Beveridge Report: Its Origins and Outcomes

Abstract In the middle of the Second World War, during the period when Britain was left alone to fight Hitler’s Germany, the Beveridge Report was published. It was seen by many throughout the world as the dawning of a new age to replace the prewar horrors of mass unemployment, inability to afford health care and poverty in sickness, widowhood and old age. The language was confident and grandiloquent The plan for social security is put forward as part of a general programme of social policy.
