Dances for a prosperous year
View through Europeana Collections
Right-hand part of the triptych (cf. BI 11565-63 + BI 11565-64) With this picture, Kunisada seems to celebrate himself in old age. Dances for a successful year were conducted throughout Japan at different times. Here a dance in the summer, perhaps in connection with the obon festival. Kunisada uses different ways to incorporate his stage name: the first character of the title refers to his name Toyo Kun( -kuni). With some imagination one could also interpret the title as “dances in honor of the high age of Toyokuni (= Kunisada).” In addition, each leaf shows a Toshidama seal Zusätzlich 様 (sign of the Utagawa school) in which a different character from its signature can be seen: Toyo Zusätzlich - kuni Zusätzlich - ga 様, which, combined with kana script, forms a promising spell. In addition, the character “toyo” or “yutaka” and the Toshidama seal appear on the subjects of the dancers. The dancers could be actors. The garments are all the same: one half with dragonflies and grasses, the other half with actor’s coat of arms?
