The « Caribbeanization » of New York City: West Indian Carnival in Brooklyn

Le carnaval caribéen organisé chaque année à Brooklyn au moment de la fête du travail est l'occasion d'un grand rassemblement populaire où la population antillaise de New York investit l'espace public d'une multitude de signes — défilés, costumes et musiques — par lesquels ces immigrants du tiers-monde énoncent et recomposent leur identité. Ce lieu de fête est aussi lieu de tensions et de rivalités. Dans la convivialité où la violence, de nouveaux défis sont lancés à la société d'accueil, comme à la tradition du pageant américain qui avait, au début du siècle, tenté de définir l'identité nationale.
