Solid Lubricating Ability of Diamond Nanoparticles

View through CrossRef
Diamond nanoparticles synthesised by the detonation method show excellent solid lubricating ability, unlike bulk and micrometre sized diamond particles. Friction measurements of Si substrates with deposited diamond nanoparticles were carried out to investigate the solid lubricating ability of diamond nanoparticles in a dry friction condition. The Si substrates with deposited diamond nanoparticles showed a lower coefficient of friction (0·06 - 0·37) than that of non-deposited Si substrate (0·68). The surface density of deposited diamond nanoparticles and friction conditions significantly affected the coefficient of friction. Atomic force microscopy observations of friction surfaces indicated that the wear loss was remarkably reduced by depositing diamond nanoparticles and that diamond nanoparticles were much less abrasive than bulk and micrometre sized diamonds.
