This article points out unnoticed echoes of Homer (Od. 9.38-39) and Virgil (Aen. 3.1 ff. and perhaps 2.21-23) in Hor. Carm. 1.10.13-16 and shows that in this Horatian stanza the transmitted ‘variatio’ Ilio […] Troiae is perfectly sound and does not need to be emended. The article also shows that Ov. Fast. 5.663-664 (quem montibus […] Iovi) derives directly from Alcaeus (fr. 308).
