Evolution of Indian Classical Music in the Context of Indian Knowledge Tradition

The ‘Indian Knowledge Tradition’ encompasses a body of ancient principles and the intellectual contributions of sages and scholars, in which the roots of contemporary Indian culture, traditions, ideologies, and policies are deeply embedded. This explains why, despite foreign invasions and diverse cultural influences, India continues to occupy a distinctive position in the world due to the continuity of its civilization and culture, its indigenous knowledge systems, adaptive capacity, and moral values. In the present era, however, the forces of modernity and colonial ideologies have gradually distanced ‘Indian society’ from its ancient traditions, knowledge systems, and cultural heritage. Colonial perspectives sought to portray ‘Indian culture and knowledge’ as irrational and unscientific, thereby fostering ignorance and a sense of inferiority among Indians toward their own cultural heritage. Within such a milieu, ‘Indian Classical Music’ has played a vital role not only in preserving cultural continuity but also as a major medium of the ‘Indian Knowledge Tradition’ in the transmission of knowledge and in shaping social conduct, cultural exchange, and political, economic, personal, psychological, and therapeutic domains. Since ancient times, music has remained an integral part of Indian life, thought, and cultural structure, and continues to serve as an important foundation of India’s rich cultural heritage. From this perspective, the present study employs qualitative and historical research methods with reference to nada, shruti, swara, raga, tala, and various vocal traditions. The study aims to examine the developmental journey of ‘Indian Classical Vocal Music’ by elucidating the interrelationship between the ‘Indian Knowledge Tradition’ and ‘Indian Classical Music’. The findings suggest that ‘Indian Classical Music’ constitutes a major dimension of the ‘Indian Knowledge Tradition’ and has, since ancient times, contributed significantly to the formation of Indian culture, moral and intellectual development, and the preservation and dissemination of cultural values. Furthermore, through its interconnections with yoga, spirituality, piece, worship, medicine, science, mathematics, and cultural thought, ‘Indian Classical Music’ has played a crucial role in shaping and sustaining ‘Indian civilization’.
