An altar of Dionysos at Delos
The monument which, at Delos, has obtain notoriety through the restoration on its two sides of two bases supporting phalluses has been variously interpreted. Niche for some, altar or chapel of Dionysos for others, it is designated as a "Podest for choregic monuments" in the Ph. Bruneau and J. Ducat edition of the Guide de Délos which appeared in 2005. An analysis of the remains leads to recognizing an altar, dedicated to Dionysos in the first decennies of Independence, or, more precisely, around 280 BC. Derived from the altar type with antae, it has been associated with various statues consecrated to the god. The identification permits a better grasp of the history of the cult-site dedicated to Dionysos to the north-east of the sanctuary of Apollon.
