Abstract
Darfur was stricken by drought in the early 1980s. The drought was the most obvious and immediate cause of the famine. This was not merely a one or two years’ failure of the rains. In many parts of Darfur, the drought has been unremitting for a decade and more. At the same time, Darfur has suffered ecological degradation: the bare goz that rings El Fasher town, and the bleakness of Saiyah. In the years after 1978, Sudan was also plunged into a huge economic crisis. The commercial, monetized economy which had advanced into Darfur over the preceding decades was suddenly crippled and forced into retreat.
