Oxygenic Photosynthetic Bacteria
View through CrossRef
The oxygenic photosynthetic procaryotes comprise a single phylogenetic branch within the domain Bacteria (Eubacteria). In this chapter, it is concluded that the three described genera of the chl
a/b
‐containing oxygenic procaryotes (
Prochloron
,
Prochlorothrix
, and
Prochlorococcus
) fall within three distinct polyphyletic branches of the cyanobacterial tree according to 16S rDNA sequence analyses, and are, therefore, more closely related to a number of typical cyanobacteria than to each other. Thus, the synthesis of a second type of light‐harvesting chlorophyll, or the lack of phycobiliproteins or phycobilisomes within the cyanobacteria, should not be considered as a major phylogenetic divergence.
