El Real Convento agustino de Nuestra Señora de Loreto en Huesca

The Augustinian Convent of Loreto, in Huesca, is the only monastery that was founded by initiative of the Spanish monarchy andgiven to theAugustinians, in particular to theAugustinian province of the Crown of Aragon.Along with the monastery of El Escorial, King Philip II wanted to show his gratitude to San Lorenzo after the Battle of San Quentin. The Augustinian community will have as their main responsibility the care of the pre-existing sanctuary in the area, where tradition places the origins of the martyr San Lorenzo.It will be an economically stable convent, thanks to the abundant donations that it received from King Philip II, and will be resided by a fairly large community of about 20 religious. Famous AragoneseAugustinians, who practiced teaching in the chairs of the Universities of Huesca and Zaragoza, and one of whom even become a bishop will pass through this convent’s portals. One of the best-known Augustinians was the mystic writer Fr. Pedro Malón de Echaide.
