Cicely Saunders and her early associates: A kaleidoscope of effects
View through CrossRef
This chapter explores the singular influence of Dr Cicely Saunders on the emerging field of interest in terminal care, together with that of her collaborators and associates. It shows how she began to articulate new ideas about the care of the dying, building on the inspiration of the terminal care homes. This required the adoption of new methods and a modern approach based on the three dimensions of clinical care, teaching, and research. These were embodied in the work of the first of the ‘modern’ hospice, St Christopher’s, which Saunders opened in 1967. Its influence was to quickly spread worldwide.
