ROLE OF AYURVEDIC NUTRITION IN PRE AND POST-SURGICAL CARE IN ANORECTAL HEALTH

View through CrossRef
Surgical procedures create significant physiological stress on the human body, affecting digestion, metabolism, immunity, tissue repair, and overall well-being. Nutritional support during the pre- and post-surgical period is therefore essential for successful recovery and prevention of complications. Ayurveda offers a holistic and individualized approach to surgical care through dietary management, digestive regulation, lifestyle modifications, and natural healing principles. Ayurvedic nutrition emphasizes the maintenance of Agni (digestive fire), balance of Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), proper tissue nourishment (Dhatu Poshana), and elimination of toxins (Ama) to promote healing and restore physiological balance. Anorectal disorders such as hemorrhoids, fissure-in-ano, fistula-in-ano, pilonidal sinus, and chronic constipation significantly affect physical comfort, digestive health, and quality of life. Surgical interventions are often required in moderate to severe cases; however, postoperative recovery may be complicated by pain, inflammation, constipation, infection, delayed wound healing, and recurrence. Proper nutritional management therefore becomes an essential component of successful anorectal surgical care. Ayurveda provides a holistic perspective on ano rectal health through the principles of Ahara (diet), Agni (digestive fire), Dosha balance, Pathya-Apathya, and natural healing. Ancient Ayurvedic texts describe anorectal disorders under conditions such as Arsha, Bhagandara, and Parikartika, emphasizing digestive impairment, improper dietary habits, sedentary lifestyle, and bowel irregularities as major etiological factors. Ayurvedic nutrition aims to improve digestion, regulate bowel movements, reduce inflammation, promote tissue repair, and prevent recurrence of disease. This chapter explores the role of Ayurvedic nutrition in both preoperative preparation and postoperative recovery of anorectal disorders. It discusses therapeutic dietary practices, digestive management, Rasayana nutrition, fiber-rich food recommendations, hydration, herbal support, and lifestyle modifications beneficial for anorectal healing. The integration of Ayurvedic dietary wisdom with modern surgical nutrition may offer a comprehensive and patient-centered approach for improving surgical outcomes, enhancing recovery, and promoting long-term anorectal wellness. Ayurvedic nutrition not only supports physical healing but also enhances mental and emotional well-being during recovery. Integrating Ayurvedic dietary practices with modern surgical management may improve patient outcomes, accelerate rehabilitation, and contribute to holistic healthcare approaches in contemporary medicine.
