Abstract
This chapter begins to explore the mechanics of how the spiritual is linked to the temporal in Paulinus’ thought. Paulinus’ descriptions of his building projects are imbued with symbolism; architecture and images serve as a starting point for spiritual meditation. Earthly images are inferior to spiritual reality – yet the spiritual is persistently expressed in figural language. The paradoxes of Christianity are thus more readily expressed; rich webs of imagistic association are established.
