Sleep quality is Define as the feeling of fully relax mentally and physically and a sense of overall satisfaction of a person upon awakening from sleep. It consists of several important components including how an individual or person falls asleep or how a person or individual initiate sleeping (sleep initiation) how well they stay asleep through out the night without any disturbances or interruptions (sleep maintenance) and how well a person feel fresh alert and sense of satisfaction upon awakening from sleep in morning. Together, all these factors contribute to the perception of having had a restful and restorative sleep. Academic performance is the indicator of student learning progress and the development of intellectual capabilities, academic performance is often use to measure the educational success and achievements of students and thus helps in students evaluation
Methodology: This study used an analytical cross-sectional design to explore the link between sleep quality and academic performance in 249 undergraduate nursing students from private institutes in Peshawar. Data were gathered through a structured questionnaire that included the PSQI and an academic performance scale. The information was then examined in SPSS using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation tests. Ethical approval was obtained, and all participants gave informed consent, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to research ethics.
Results: The study included 249 undergraduate nursing students, with 67.1% over 20 years of age and 79.9% male. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). showing mild sleep problems with mean scores for subjective sleep quality (Mean = 0.70, SD = 0.77), sleep latency (Mean = 0.63, SD = 0.62), and sleep disturbances (Mean = 1.18, SD = 0.77). Academic performance scores were generally high, with the desire to get good grades showing the highest mean (Mean = 3.35, SD = 0.92). Pearson correlation revealed significant negative associations between poorer sleep indicators including subjective sleep quality, Sleep onset time, and sleep disturbances, demonstrated significant negative associations with academic behaviors (r = –0.25 to –0.40, p < 0.01). reflecting that sleep problems adversely affect students’ academic engagement and performance.
Conclusion: The study concludes that poor sleep quality, particularly issues with sleep initiation, maintenance, and disturbances, is significantly associated with lower academic engagement and performance among nursing students. Students with better sleep patterns demonstrate higher motivation, attentiveness, and proactive learning behaviors. Promoting healthy sleep habits is essential to enhance cognitive functioning and academic success in this population.
