Bion’s short analysis with Rickman seems to have released the creative energy which enabled him to become more energetic, creative and hopeful Their collaboration in war-time was significant for both of them and the relationship had much reciprocity to it. Bion’s later analysis with Melanie Klein deepened his understanding of infantile mental mechanisms that led to the review of experiences in groups. However, it also led to the cessation of his active work with groups and this may, to some extent, have been because of Melanie Klein’s negative view of the group situation and her idealisation of her own approach to the psychoanalytic situation. There is some evidence from Bion’s own writings that he maintained a considerable degree of detachement during the course of this second analysis. The source material for this paper was derived from Rickman’s published and unpublished work and from Bion’s autobiographical writings.
