Nature, Consciousness, and Ecological Thought: An Ecocritical Analysis of William Wordsworth and Abdul Ghani Khan’s Selected Poems

Ecocriticism is a critical study in literature that examines the relationship between literature and environment. It explores how nature is represented in texts, how humans interact with nature, and how literature can shape ecological consciousness. Some poets, such as William Wordsworth, a famous literary figure of 19th century English Romanticism and Abdul Ghani khan, a prominent 20th century Pashto poet, explore human- nature relationship in their poetry which encourages ecological consciousness and deepens man's connection to nature. Although, their work has been analyzed from different critical perspectives, their poetry has yet to be the subject of comparative study from the perspective of Lawrence Buell's ecocritical theory of Environmental Imagination (1995). This research aimed to fill this gap by using Lawrence Buell's ecocritical theory of Environmental Imagination (1995) and Alan McKee's textual analysis (2001) to compare the portrayal of the human-nature relationship in Abdul Ghani Khan and William Wordsworth's chosen poems.The findings showed the similarities and differences between the two poets and deduced that in spite of differences in their eras, geographical locations, cultures, language and style, there is affinity between the two poets in their attitude towards human-nature relationship. The current research addressed the vast demand for literary-linguistic examination of leitmotifs of nature in geographical, cultural, and linguistic circumstances as a way of promoting environmental sensitivity and sensibility. By applying an ecocritical perspective, this study further showed how their poems encourage readers to reconsider their own relationship with nature and recognize its essential role in human life.
