Asian Pentecostal Theologies

Abstract Pentecostalism is a movement that originated at the dawn of the twentieth century in various parts of the world and is now a polynucleated and variegated phenomenon. Asian Pentecostalism has both Indigenous and Western missionary roots. This chapter examines Asian Pentecostalism and its theologies in light of their evolving expressions among grassroots communities across the continent. The definitions of both Western and Asian Pentecostalism must be reconsidered within the local cultural and historical contexts of Asia. In the Asian context, pentecostal pneumatology—particularly the doctrine of Spirit baptism—emphasizes victory over oppressive demonic forces. A pneumatological lens is the key to understanding pentecostal ecclesiology, eschatology, and theology of religions. Pentecostalism, as a religion made to travel, resonates more with the popular religiosity of the Asian context. Its praxis-oriented, grassroots approach to mission has particularly enabled communities at the margins in the Asian context to embrace and identify with the pentecostal faith. The Holy Spirit enables discernment of the presence and activity of the Spirit, especially beyond the institutional boundaries of the church.
