The Lamian War, 323–322BC

AbstractAlexander the Great's death prompted many Greek states to respond to an Athenian appeal to unite in overthrowing Macedonian domination. The availability of substantial finances and discharged mercenaries aided the Greek cause, while the Macedonian world was still in turmoil. Antipater, regent in Macedon, was besieged in Lamia and the Thessalian cavalry defeated Macedonian forces coming to his relief. At sea, however, the Athenian navy proved no match for the might of new Macedonian fleets, while on land the fragmenting Greek alliance was eventually defeated by Antipater. Athens capitulated, being forced to accept the replacement of its democracy.
