Komon 小紋. Surface pattern (waritsuke monyō 割付文様): matsukawabishi 松皮菱

Underground dyed Passover marks (hoshi P). Template damaged. Matsukawabishi Matsupattern consists of 3 rhomboids that are stacked up and in each other. The name comes from the fact that the shape resembles the broken pine bark. Matsu M= Pinie, kawa M= bark (skin), hishi/bishi M= rhombus. In most cases, dye stencils for komon är( “fine pattern”) are produced using a drill cut method (kiribori är様). Comon is usually not oriented towards a specific direction and is so fine that it appears monochrome from a distance.
