Digital Gazetteers

Abstract Digital gazetteers are an important component in many databases and digital projects: their role is to document, disambiguate and help visualize and map places. This chapter aims at presenting digital gazetteers as well as key information about what they are, how they are built and used and how they may interoperate. It will then provide information and ground rules about developing your own digital gazetteer (where to search, how to set it up)—in beginning a new research project and finding the existing ones don’t cover your needs. It also offers a selection of place-based resources—gazetteers and Web-GIS (geographic information system) resources that have similar purposes, such as iDAI.gazetteer, ArchaeoCosmos, the Mycenaean Atlas Project, PeriodO, Pleiades, the resources from the Dipylon Society, Archaeology in Greece Online, DARE, and some others, allowing you to explore possibilities and a variety of resources. The selection presented in this chapter, however, is not comprehensive and focuses mainly on Graeco-Roman antiquities.
