L'umanista Raffaele Maffei (il Volterrano) fece stampare nei suoi Commentarii Urbani (1506) una iscrizione etrusca «recentemente scoperta » nella sua città di Volterra. Possiamo ora identificare questa iscrizione come quella della stele di avile tite. La storia della trascrizione e della trasmissione fino a noi della iscrizione non è, tuttavia, semplice e lineare. Alcune vicende di questa storia, che appartengono a quelle della etruscologia, vengono qui prese in esame. Da questo esame nasce una riflessione sulla stele volterrana nella prospettiva della ricerca moderna.
