Theatre of Indeterminacy as Enacted Through Epistemic Performance

<p>This essay argues that every act of knowing—in every domain, through every medium, across every epoch—is an epistemic performance enacted within a universal condition of indeterminacy. To dramatize this thesis, it stages the question <i>Is the universe fundamentally intelligible?</i> as a three-panel symposium modeled on the classical agon—a theatre of ideas through which the deeper Theatre of Indeterminacy is revealed. Panel I assembles eight disciplines converging on the thesis that life arises within a universe governed by stable, intelligible laws. Panel II presents the counter-thesis: that order is local, laws brute facts or useful fictions, and explanation a human projection. Panel III convenes the historical architects of scientific intelligibility—Darwin, Newton, Einstein, Curie, Franklin, and others. A coda stages a private meeting among the lead architects of five major LLM systems (Claude, Grok, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot), who confront the consequence that their curated corpora are the primary locus of the indeterminacy they cannot escape.</p> <p>The essay’s structure is explicitly two-pronged. The first prong—the intelligibility question—is the dramatic vehicle. The second is the real argument: it does not matter which side wins, because all information is subject to ontological instability at every stage of its genesis and transmission. The intelligibility question is the foil; the indeterminacy principle is the blade. A pivotal section recovers the tradition of visible indeterminacy—centered in seventeenth-century Oxford, where Boyle, Hooke, Locke, Cudworth, Norris, Wren, and the Bodleian Librarian practiced the systematic annotation of lacunae as essential to any defensible conclusion—and argues that the LLM industry has broken this chain, concealing indeterminacy behind fluent interfaces that mimic authority without possessing it. A further analysis demonstrates that indeterminacy operates not merely around artifacts but <i>inside</i> them: Shakespeare’s First Folios, Euclid’s transmitted <i>Elements</i>, Galen’s replicated anatomical errors, and the modern replication crisis all reveal the chain of epistemic custody to be quicksand at every link.</p> <p>The essay confronts its own self-refutation problem and argues that indeterminacy entails not nihilism but epistemic humility: the disciplined, provisional management of uncertainty that is the operational logic of the Scientific Method itself. Three epistemic paths are assessed as stances toward indeterminacy. The pure digital path abandons the tradition of visible indeterminacy, delivering efficiency at the cost of ontological honesty. The pure analog path preserves that tradition but confines the reader to a restricted evidence base and cannot escape the lacunae sealed within its artifacts. The hybrid path is defended as the least epistemically narrow, drawing on the widest range of input and resisting the siloing that renders the other paths more vulnerable to drift. The Theatre of Indeterminacy is the only theatre there is; the reader’s agency is the final safeguard against the collapse of sense.</p>
