Andalusia - Pendant
View through Europeana Collections
Pendant featuring a composition formed by a crescent moon, an eye with a tear, a Spanish guitar and a star. More than a common artist, Pérez Villalta is considered an artificer in the Renaissance sense of the term. That is why he reworked classical literary and iconographic sources, adapting them to the ornaments he created. It should be noted in this sense that Pérez Villalta prefers to use the term ornaments to the detriment of the more conventional denomination, that is, jewels. They are ornaments even though their raw material departs from classical canons and even though their iconography requires explanations: they are so neither more nor less because of the intention with which they have been created.
