Xenon – Poison or Supportive Agent?
View through CrossRef
The effects of xenon on the human body have not yet been sufficiently studied, but most of its effects can be described as positive. Xenon affects a number of molecular mechanisms in the body. For example, it has advantageous properties as an anesthetic. Inhalation of xenon increases the production of erythropoietin, which can be used, for example, in doping. A number of clients describe the beneficial effects of xenon inhalation on numerous physical and mental functions. Promoters of alternative medicine refer to xenon as the most powerful drug ever. Only excessive use of xenon without medical control is dangerous. The term xenon poisoning is therefore limited to the field of nuclear technology, where it refers to a state in which the function of a nuclear reactor is blocked by one of the isotopes of xenon. This undesirable condition became one of the causes of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986.
