Inquiry into James Mill’s interpretation of Adam Smith’s love of praiseworthiness

Cet article analyse la relation entre James Mill et Adam Smith sur la question du désir d’être digne d’éloge. D’abord, il montre que Mill fut un lecteur de la Théorie des sentiments moraux de Smith. Ensuite, l’article explique la façon dont Mill interprète Smith à propos du désir d’être digne d’éloge. Selon le premier, bien que Smith « décrivait éloquemment » un tel désir, il n’en donnait pas la fondation analytique. James Mill se proposa alors de la donner, à savoir, une sorte de calcul moral utilitariste. Enfin, l’article questionne cette interprétation, en montrant que s’il existe bien quelques passages assez proches de celle-ci, Mill n’est pas fidèle à la théorie morale de Smith.
