Review of Datacenter Deployment and Carbon Footprint in the United States of America

View through CrossRef
The adoption of cloud computing technology and services in the 21st century has rapidly increased. This is evident in the high deployments of datacenters across the globe. The rapid development of new datacenters has led to higher energy usage, which keeps them running with environmental and climatic consequences. Researchers have shed light on developing efficient cloud energy optimisation techniques and analysing the carbon footprint from datacenters. This paper reviewed the effect of increased datacenters in the USA and the environmental and climatic dangers. Data from websites and academic articles related to datacenters in the USA were obtained from various reputable outlets, including ScienceDirect, IEEE, and ACM. The obtained data was analysed using basic descriptive statistical techniques. The analysis reveals that approximately 52% of the global datacenters are located in the USA, with Northern Virginia having the highest number of datacenters. Furthermore, 93% of the energy supply to datacenters is obtained from high greenhouse gas-emitting energy sources. The paper recommends intensifying policies and improvements in integrating renewable energy sources into data center design to reduce the carbon footprint of datacenters in the USA and the world.
