Chinese Philosophy from the Eighteenth Century to the Present

Across a set of three volumes spanning more than three thousand years, this is a survey of thinkers central to the development of philosophical thought in China. The third volume depicts the eventful development of Chinese philosophy from the late Qing Dynasty onwards, characterized by the reinterpretation of Chinese tradition as a response to the challenge of modern Western culture and the revendication of a legitimate place for Chinese philosophy among world philosophies. This process, primarily affected by the academic professionalization of philosophy and the emergence of new philosophical terminology, led to a unique engagement with Kantianism, pragmatism, and Marxism, as well as the modern rejuvenation of Confucian ideas. This book offers a complex image of contemporary Chinese philosophy and covers its often overlooked currents, such as Chinese logic, bioethics, feminism, environmental thought, and ethnic minority philosophy.
