Este artigo apresenta breve análise sobre o político e escritor José Américo de Almeida, precursor do Romance de 30 e um dos mais importantes personagens da história política brasileira de 1930 a 1950. O objetivo é conhecer algumas das práticas das elites políticas na primeira metade do século XX e, particularmente, a participação de José Américo no contexto da época. Para esse fim, foram utilizados artigos científicos, dissertações de mestrado e teses de doutorado, biografias, artigos de jornais e o romance A Bagaceira. Este trabalho é um resultado da disciplina Estudos de História do Nordeste e busca contribuir para o conhecimento da cultura política no Nordeste. Os resultados parciais apontam para a compreensão de que as elites políticas brasileiras têm invariavelmente reproduzido práticas fundadas numa mentalidade ou num imaginário social e de dominação política apegada à exclusão social, à reprodução das desigualdades sociais.
