Abstract
The disgrace of Belisarius in 542 proved to be temporary, and by spring 544 (or possibly earlier) the general was rehabilitated by the Emperor Justinian (r. 527–565). Justinian had a tendency toward clemency when dealing with famous subjects like his general, Belisarius. Restored to favor, Belisarius was dispatched to Italy a second time to prosecute war with the Ostrogoths who survived there under a new king, Totila (r. 541–552). Antonina again accompanied Belisarius to Italy. Unfortunately, there were not enough experienced Roman soldiers for Belisarius to prosecute the war successfully, and he spent five years fighting a losing campaign against Totila and the Ostrogoths. In despair, Belisarius sent Antonina to Constantinople to ask Empress Theodora for reinforcements. But Theodora died just before Antonina arrived, so she instead asked Justinian to recall Belisarius.
