Die übersetzerische Tätigkeit Stefan I. Kleins erstreckte sich über mehr als vier Jahrzehnte. Seine Arbeit als Vermittler ungarischer Prosa begann Klein 1913 mit dem Band "Die magische Laterne", einer Novellensammlung Dezső Kosztolányis; 1957 erschien als seine letzte selbständige Publikation die Anthologie "Ungarische Meistererzähler". Insgesamt legte er in seiner Übersetzerlaufbahn acht Prosaanthologien zeitgenössischer ungarischer Autoren vor. Daneben veröffentlichte er eine Reihe von Romanen und Erzählungen namhafter Autoren der Moderne wie Mihály Babits, Dezső Kosztolányi und Ernő Szép.
