Pit, Fissure and Smooth Surface Caries of First and Second Permanent Molars in Urban Nigerians

The prevalence of pit, fissure and smooth surface caries of first and second permanent molars was studied in 820 Nigerian subjects aged 15–21 years from Lagos educational establishments. The prevalence of pit and fissure caries was higher in second permanent molars than in first permanent molars, pit and fissure carious cavities in second permanent molars being three times those in first permanent molars. In contrast, the prevalence of smooth surface caries was higher in first permanent molars than in second permanent molars, the ratio of second: first permanent molars with smooth surface cavities being 0.5. This suggests that the higher prevalence of caries in second permanent molars than in first permanent molars reported in Lagos, Nigeria, may be due to a difference in the caries susceptibility of the fissures.
