Narrativas da renúncia

This article analyzes the different narratives constructed around Jânio Quadros’ resignation from the Presidency of the Republic in 1961, focusing on biographical interpretations and the construction of his public image. The study identifies two main perspectives on the resignation: the first, marked by Jânio’s inability to govern versus a strategy to obtain more power. In parallel, the approaches that considered the construction of Jânio’s image as a differentiated, modern politician with widely propagated anti-corruption discourses in his political campaigns are investigated. The article also seeks to explore the relationship between the interpretations of the resignation and the strategies for consolidating his image, aiming to understand a crucial moment in 20th-century Brazilian political history.
